Common Questions

Water Baptism FAQ

Water baptism is a sacred act of obedience to Jesus (Matthew 28:19) and serves as the sign of the New Covenant. It symbolizes dying to sin (going under the water) and rising to new life in Christ (coming up out of the water), as described in Romans 6. It publicly declares a believer’s faith and commitment to Jesus.

No. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by works or rituals (Ephesians 2:8–9). The thief on the cross was saved without baptism. Baptism does not save or add to salvation — it is an important step of obedience after salvation.

Anyone who has put their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Baptism is for believers of all ages, races, and genders. It is not limited to any specific group, reflecting the inclusive nature of the New Covenant.

Immersion best pictures the biblical symbolism of burial with Christ in death and resurrection to new life. It also echoes powerful Old Testament pictures such as the flood in Noah’s day, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

We believe in “one baptism” as the biblical ideal (Ephesians 4:5). However, we also allow and celebrate re-baptism as a personal, meaningful step for those who:

  • Were baptized as young children and did not fully understand the gospel, or
  • Have experienced a significant season of wandering or disobedience and want to publicly reaffirm their commitment to Christ.

Re-baptism is never required for salvation or church membership — it is a personal decision, not a theological necessity.

Any believer can baptize another believer. There are no strict biblical requirements limiting it to pastors or clergy.

In summary, at Overflow Church baptism is a joyful, powerful declaration of new life in Christ — not a requirement for salvation, but an important act of obedience and public testimony.
