What We Believe

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Overflow Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

The Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Because it was inspired by God, the Bible is truth without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our daily lives.

The Father

God is great. He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, unchanging, completely worthy of our trust, and above all, Holy. It is in Him that we live, move, and exist. God is good. He is our Father. He is loving, compassionate, and faithful to His people and His promises.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit’s presence assures us of our relationship with Christ. He guides believers into all truth and exalts Christ. He convicts people of their sin, God’s righteousness, and the coming judgment. He comforts us, gives us spiritual gifts, and makes us more like Christ.

The Trinity

God has existed in relationship with Himself for all eternity. He exists as one substance in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Although each member of the Trinity serves different functions, they each posses equal power and authority.

The Son

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

The Church

The Church is a local community of believers unified through faith in Christ. We are committed to the teachings Christ, to obeying all of His commands, and to bringing the Gospel to this world. The Church works together in love and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ.

Baptism

"For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ ... " Colossians 2:12
We practice baptism by immersion under water the way Jesus was baptized, symbolizing the process of death and resurrection that Jesus went through for us.

Man

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God's creation. Although every man has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". This attitude separates man from God and causes many problems in life.

Prayer

Prayer is the ability to communicate with God. Through Jesus' salvation, we no longer need an intercessor to go between God and us; we can address Him directly.

Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

Salvation

The blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the only way of salvation through the forgiveness of sin. Salvation occurs when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin. Salvation is a gift from God, and it cannot be earned through our own efforts.
