Day Twelve

Prayer Focus: Identity

“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.”
Ephesians 1:4-7 NLT

-“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!”
Psalms 139:13-17 NLT

In fact, I think most issues people appear to have stem from a poor understanding of their identity. Understanding my identity is one of the biggest struggles and battles I have had to deal with too. But even recently, God has been speaking to me about this! Let’s take a journey into my head for a moment… This is a journal entry of mine from a few days ago:

Our identity can’t be in our past mistakes or failures.  When we have Christ, we become like Him. God created us in His image. If we constantly see ourselves as failures, mistakes and worthless we are only letting the enemy win. We are His children and He sacrificed everything for us.  We must see ourselves as God sees us.

Sometimes we see our mistakes and scars as something too deep for God to heal.  We’ve gone too far for God to forgive or love us.  But have you forgotten about the cross!?  The scars Jesus got from the cross are deeper than anything mistake or failure of ours!  He endured the pain that led to those scars to show His deep love for us. God created us and chose us before we were born, so it hurts Him for us to call what He made anything less than beautiful.  I may not feel worthy, but God made me and chose me, and He doesn’t make junk :)

Prayer: “God, thank you for creating me in your image, and thank you for giving me purpose.  Forgive me when I demean your creation and don’t see your worth in me.  I pray that my eyes would be fixed on what you say and not what the enemy says.”

DON’T STOP THERE! When you feel that bad habit creep in to call yourself stupid or an idiot, just say this line: “I am loved, I am loved. I can risk loving You, for the one who knows me best loves me most.”

Love,
Courtney Howell
