Day Fourteen

Prayer Focus: My City

Jeremiah 29:7 (ESV)
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”

Acts 4:32-35 (ESV)
Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

John 13:34 (ESV)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

My city. I didn’t fully embrace or take ownership of where I had been placed by God until just a few years ago. Sure, I had lived in McKenzie for several years prior, but I always felt like I didn’t really belong here. I thought since we didn’t grow up here that we would never really be welcome. (I also really wanted to live closer to an Aldi and a Starbucks.) By allowing these lies into my mind, I was blocking so many opportunities for God to use me. I spent my time wishing for something more than where God had me.

I absolutely love looking back over my life so far and seeing the ways God has fully orchestrated each piece of the puzzle to put me exactly where He wants me. Can you look back over your life and see some of the awesome ways God has worked to get you to where you are today? God has led me to THIS CITY for a reason! I can’t live out God’s divine purpose for me in my city unless I trust that God has me exactly where He wants me.

I now believe that God has brought me to McKenzie for a reason. I now view my city completely differently than I did years ago and I am so thankful to be able to live here! My perspective has shifted and I now see McKenzie as my mission field. I see Overflow Church and fellow churches as our mission teams. Let’s go!

What did Jesus do during his ministry on earth? He didn’t just stay inside all the time and binge watch Touched By an Angel or try new kinds of fish recipes. ;) He spent time in the cities WITH the people. He went to the house of a tax collector, a wedding, met a woman at the well, spoke to city officials, visited the sick, hung out with his close friends, and really dug in. He saw needs and he met them. This is what we are called to do today.

No matter where you live, take root, dig in, get involved! How can you be a light for Jesus where you have been “planted”? There are so many ways we can show love in our city! What can you do to better your town? God gives us daily opportunities to show love to those around us if we just take the time to pay attention to how He is working and jump in.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for placing me in this city. Help me to come in contact with others that I can show love to today. Direct my steps to where I can be most used for You and your glory. I don’t want to take for granted where you have planted me. Help me to be a light, see needs and find ways to meet them, and truly love the people where you have me!

Don't Stop There! Don’t just sit on the sidelines! Get involved in your community. If you don’t engage with your community how can you be a light? What passion has God given you? You can use that passion to help your city see more of God! You can volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center, visit the elderly, pick up trash at the park, get involved in city events, and so much more! There are so many opportunities to show the people of our city that we love them, and that God loves them, too!

Love you all,
